Christmas Brunch, Snuggie Party

Brunch was lovely.  Just lovely!  Guests started to arrive around 11 am, we ate our breakfast appetizer of swiss/beer fondue, popped some bottles, and the Pandora Bing Crosby Christmas channel was solid.  While we'd told everyone repeatedly that the attire for the day was sweats, Neighbor Neal showed up all dressed up in his nice shirt!  Brunch was awesome:  Matt E's strata (with peppers and mushrooms), Kai's muffins, the Morrisons' biscuits and sausage gravy, Neal's potatoes, plus a fruit tray, the fondue and my attempt at making us one healthy thing, which was met with laughter: brussels sprouts.

It was a great day.  We did nothing.  Truly nothing.  We sat, we chatted, we listened to music, we rested, we gazed into the fire, we watched the cat's self worth dissolve with each new outfit, we ate, drank, and sat around some more.  I was missing my Roomie but glad she's with her folks in VA.

Table is Set, Santa Hat is Pressed, Bar is Stocked.

T-Minus 4 hours until Christmaspalooza '09/Family-Free Christmas Brunch.  Matt came over the other night to set the table in advance (lovely), and I've just a bit of cooking to finish up the morning before people start arriving.  Last night, my dream of AbFab Christmas became reality.  Neighbor Neal and I watched a couple of episodes before I completely passed out at... embarrassed to admit... 9:30.  I woke up at midnight, with a televised Mass blaring, incredibly confused.  Can hardly contain my excitement about brunch today...

Daily Food 12/24/09
Breakfast: pancakes, apple
Lunch: nothing
Snack: shared hot artichoke dip and baguette
Dinner: mashed potatoes, vegan gravy, Tofurkey sausage, sauteed hearty greens
Misc: Christmas Eve bubbly, a little bit o' fine chocolate

Tiny Tuesday: Cats Don't Like Wearing Clothes.

The lillies bloomed!

We couldn't resist some Christmas clothes for the cat.  The second we put the little coat on her, she forgot how to be a cat and started violently flailing about the apartment trying to get it off.  She staggered around like she was drunk before finally just giving up on life and playing dead until we took the darn thing off.  The antlers went over just about at well.  The best part about the little coat is that it is too small, so there's a Chris Farley "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" thing goin' on.

Daily Food 12/21/09
Breakfast: 1/2 a veggie roll from BRM; veg sausage patty
Lunch: green salad w/ oranges, mashed potato, grilled salmon, bread
Dinner: shared snack plate of carmelized shallot dip, Triscuits, guac/salsa, an apple

Weekend Culture Part III: Christmaspalooza '09

A tough nut to crack!  Believe me, I tried...

The lovely tree at Amadeus.

Such a cool spot.  Can't believe I never knew about it before!

Another whirlwind weekend!  Friday night, Estelle B was so kind to invite me over for latkes and homemade applesauce... I ate more than my fair share and finally got to see her house and meet the roommates.  They have a lovely tree they cut down themselves in the woods (lovely tree also has a can of PBR hanging from it).  Then, back home for some Pictionary Man (you draw ON a 3-D person!) and (more) Christmas music.

Saturday, we were off to see the Wizard!  The wonderful wizard of Oz, that is...  planned out for weeks, for some reason I convinced myself this special showing, arranged by Fleur de Lethal, was some kind of hot event and that there would be a line around the block to get in, people would be in costume, etc.  Not the case at all.  There was hardly anyone there, and they showed the movie an hour later than advertised, so we had some time to kill...  But it was awesome.  I hadn't seen the film in at least 10 years and not only noticed many things I'd never noticed before or forgotten about (the Cowardly Lion jumps out a window?!), but was reminded what a wonderful story it really is.  And because the Bagdad messed up a bit, we all got free movie passes!

Sunday, holiday brunch with the Yeeps at Amadeus Manor.  What an awesome place!  Our friend Jeannie has been extolling this restaurant's virtues for ages, but I had never been there before.  It's up on a residential hill in Milwaukie and boasts an awesome view of the Willamette.  So beautiful inside - the Christmas tree, and various holiday decor (gold walnuts, oh hello!) was all done very well.  To avoid some very uncomfortable conversation happening at the end of our table, there was nothing for us to focus on except bubbly... and we did get a touch tipsy.  Christmaspalooza.

A couple of hours later, all dressed up, we went to the Nutcracker, had a great time, and then one of the best meals in recent memory at SubRosa, one of my favorite restaurants in town, on Clinton.  Love that place.  Decided to push Peacock Lane to Christmas Eve...  I have really got to get it together tonight after work and finally pick up our Christmas tree before Roomie goes to VA for the holidays.

Daily Food 12/20/09
Breakfast: whole-grain English muffin, veg sausage, apple
Brunch: spinach quiche, potato/veg, corn muffin, fruit, pineapple sorbet, mimosas at Amadeus
Dinner: family-style (we all shared everything) at SubRosa - handmade ravioli/puttanesca, spicy Mac and Cheese, artisan pizza with yams, spinach, carmelized onion; salad of orange, avocado, cranberries, hazelnuts; gingerbread/pear cake for dessert.  WOW.

Whip It Real Good.

I know this movie came out in October, so this is old news, but I finally saw Whip It! last night at the Academy and had a great time.  All the derby girls in the movie have awesome names:  Babe Ruthless, Iron Maven, Bloody Holly, Eva Destruction... got me to thinkin', what would my derby name be?  So far, all I've come up with is Annibal Lecter but I'm officially taking suggestions.

Breakfast: Dave's Killer toast, pumpkin cream cheese
Lunch: broccoli/red onion/sunflower seed salad, half a veggie roll from Bob's Red Mill, Tofurkey slices

Misc:  Matt E brought over Christmas cookies!, ginger ale

Nothing Says Christmas Like Knuckle Tattoos

Oh, what fun.  I brought His 'N Hers temporary knuckle tats to the Christmas party at the Hoot Hut last weekend, and holy hell those are awesome.  After my initial 'inking', I went a little wild and decided I needed them all over my body.  After I'd settled on "Gold Diga" for my neck tat, JT decided to "help" me affix the thing, but JT also had put back several shots of peppermint schnapps first.  So, when he removed the paper backing after the first word was applied and started laughing hysterically, I got a little worried.  Looked in the mirror.  Saw he had tattoed "Gold" just fine... but it was upside down.

Please Snow, Please Snow, Please Snow.

Crossing my fingers and praying to Santa Claus that we get snow at some point tonight.  Exactly one year ago was the first snowstorm of Winterpocalypse 2008, which rounded out the Original Best Weekend Ever.  It began with a company party that turned pretty ugly after my then-supervisor drank her weight in cheap red wine in about 40 minutes and starting telling everyone off and calling multiple people "assholes".  I lucked out by getting a ride home before it got too nasty.  I was wearing a dress borrowed from my aunt and worth more than my life, yet despite that fact, decided it was ok to wear that to the Ship Ahoy, where I needed to go post-party to cleanse the palate, so to speak.  This was pre-smoking ban, so you bet yer bippy I had to dry clean that thing before I FedEx'd it back to her.

It quickly became clear that the 5-inch patent leather stillettos on my feet were not going to get me up Gladstone Street into my bed.  My accompanying gal pal pawned me off on a bald man at the bar and made him drive me home.  Classy.

I woke up the next morning to feet of snow outside and I couldn't have been more excited (just like I'm gonna be tomorrow, God willing).  I rang up my Neighbs (the Czech one, not Neighbor Neal) across the courtyard and demanded a collaborative brunch effort poste haste.  After some delicate preparation of a wicked rad spread of food, we sat down to eat.  And neither of us could lift our forks to our mouths.  Popped a bottle of bubbly to level out.  Which quickly turned into six, which turned into a trip to Trader Joe's (Neighbs donned a cowboy hat for some reason) to restock and we watched The Thing AND The Fly, back to back.  There was music.  There was dancing.  I made enchiladas.  We somehow lured the bald man back over for dinner.  Poor guy had no idea what he was walking into.  Neighbs put down 15 Bud Lights on top of all that bubbly.  I broke my glasses and had to thread a paper clip through them.  Snow continued to fall.  No work the next day.  It was awesome.

All I want for Hanukkah is an ice storm.  I'm so ready.

Not as Fat as I'd Thought, THANK GOD.

Awww, yeah... another Chris Farley pic.

I was really upset all day long yesterday because my coat was really tight.  I could barely button it.  I thought, "How can this be?  How can I possibly be even fatter?!  I've been working out all the time, and eating Tofurkey for dinner, W. T. F.?!  I am literally bursting out of my own skin."  Freaked out about this all day long!  How the deuce did I gain so much weight over one weekend?

Then I realized I had grabbed my skinny roommate's coat by mistake.

Tiny Tuesday: She Gives Great Gifts/No One Broke Any Glasses This Time.

It was the least she could do.

Well, I suppose it could have been worse.  We didn't end up popping too many bottles for Emilie's birthday.  But we did have to send the bday girl, banish her, actually, to her room around 10 pm.  Work night and whatnot.  But all in all, a good time!  Neighbor Neal and Matt E rolled in, I grilled up birthday quesadillas, and we listened to the Samantha Fox channel (again).  I'm a little fuzzy.

This morning I was jolted awake, heart racing, as the trash truck was outside of my bathroom window, honking.  My car was in the way.  I swear, no matter how hard I try, I cannot figure out which days the trash and recycling trucks come.  But I know they come on three different days...  So, there I was flying out the back door in my jammies to move my car when I realized I didn't have my glasses on.  Back in the apartment to grab those (everyone knows I cannot see one inch without them).  I somehow clomped about the kitchen with enough force to knock Tiny's food container off of its high shelf, causing it to go everywhere.  It looks like the damn Friskies factory exploded in my kitchen.  There's kibble in the burner wells on the stove, all over the floor, in the sink, on the dishes, etc.  That cat better appreciate this turn of good fortune... I still haven't swept it up but I don't hear any snackin' going on.

Daily Food 11/30/09
Breakfast: biscuit from Bob's Red Mill
Lunch: baked potato with steamed broccoli, soy cheese, sour cream
Dinner: black bean, olive, red pepper, cheese quesadilla; chips
Misc: birthday bubbly!
